Choose timber when
The boundary changes level, the design needs local adjustment, natural texture matters, or board-by-board repair is valuable. Specify H4 posts for ground contact and appropriate above-ground timber, then price coating separately.
Choose coated steel when
A straight run needs immediate uniform privacy and the owner wants to avoid a timber painting programme. Obtain product identity, coating, environmental category, cut-edge detail, compatible fasteners and a maintenance schedule.
Consider something else when
Use aluminium where an open/slatted coastal-conscious system fits better, PVC where modular low-coating maintenance is the main objective, or a permeable fence where wind/streetscape makes a solid screen undesirable.

Privacy is similar; behaviour is not
Both treated-timber paling and coated-steel sheet fencing can create an opaque boundary. Timber is assembled from replaceable members and can absorb small site irregularities. Coated steel gives a consistent continuous face with fewer wet-painted maintenance tasks, but relies on the selected metal/coating system and careful treatment of edges and contacts.

When each tends to win
Choose timber where repairability, on-site adaptation and a painted or natural texture matter. Choose coated steel where uniform opacity and reduced recoating are priorities and the exposure/product pairing is documented.
