For coastal Auckland, specify the exposure before selecting the fence. Salt deposits, prevailing wind, shelter from rain and proximity to surf or harbour water can change coating and cleaning requirements within the same suburb. The practical winner is the system whose manufacturer supports the actual exposure and whose cut edges, fasteners, posts and gate hardware are detailed as carefully as the panels.
Ask these questions before choosing a material
- How close is the site to breaking surf, calm salt water or an estuary?
- Does wind carry visible salt to the fence, and are surfaces naturally rain-washed?
- What environmental category does the manufacturer apply to the address?
- Which fixings, hinges, latches and fastener isolators are specified?
- What cleaning frequency and inspection record does the warranty require?

Coatings are systems, not colours
COLORSTEEL’s official guidance classifies environments from mild to extremely severe and changes warranty and washing expectations with exposure. Do not assume every profiled steel fence is a branded COLORSTEEL system, or that a warranty for roofing/cladding automatically applies to a fence product. Obtain the product name, substrate/coating, rollformer or system warranty, cut-edge method and maintenance schedule.
Wind can be as important as corrosion
Solid privacy panels carry higher wind pressure than an open fence. On an exposed North Shore ridge or eastern coastal frontage, the design may need closer posts, stronger foundations or a more permeable layout. A gate is especially vulnerable because it combines wind area with moving hardware and concentrated loads at hinge posts.
Whole-life comparison
Compare the installed price with recurring washing, recoating, replacement-part availability and the practical cost of access. A low-maintenance panel that cannot be matched after impact may be less convenient than replaceable timber palings. Conversely, a detailed aluminium system can remove the regular painting programme that a landlord wants to avoid.

Coastal exposure is a system specification
A fence near the Waitematā, Hauraki Gulf, west-coast surf or an exposed headland experiences more than salt. Wind-driven deposits, frequent wetting, UV, airborne grit and strong gusts act on coatings, fixings, gate hardware and foundations. Distance from the shoreline alone is not enough; shelter, prevailing wind and whether rain naturally washes the fence all affect exposure.
Aluminium
Aluminium does not rust in the same way as carbon steel, which makes it attractive for coastal slats, pickets and gates. Its powder-coating system still needs suitable pretreatment, product selection, application and cleaning. Dulux’s Alumi Shield warranty guidance treats marine and coastal environments separately because sea salts and wind affect coating performance. Ask for the actual powder system and warranty environment, not simply “marine grade”.
Gate hinges, latches, screws and automation can fail before aluminium panels. List hardware materials and avoid combinations that create avoidable galvanic corrosion. Rinse salt deposits at the frequency required by the coating and hardware suppliers.
Steel and coated-steel panels
Steel can provide strong security and thin solid privacy, but protection at cut edges, welds, drilled holes and impact damage is critical. A profiled coated-steel product should be identified by brand/system so its exposure limitations, edge treatment, washing and warranty can be checked. Do not describe all painted sheet products as COLORSTEEL.
Solid steel panels also catch wind. Post and foundation design, stepping, end details and gates must suit the exposed site. An open tubular or mesh steel system can reduce wind load but still requires an appropriate galvanising/coating specification.
Treated timber
Timber avoids a sheet-metal corrosion mechanism and can be repaired board by board. Use treatment suited to exposure—commonly H4 for ground-contact fence posts and H3.2 for above-ground rails/palings—and specify compatible fixings. Treatment does not prevent movement, coating weathering or moisture traps.
Detail the bottom to drain and dry, protect or treat cut ends as directed, and avoid soil or mulch building up against palings. Dark coatings can increase surface heating. A weathering or stain strategy should be chosen deliberately rather than after the fence has already changed colour.
PVC
PVC does not rot and avoids metal-panel corrosion, so it can suit a coastal privacy boundary. It remains a wind-loaded panel system and usually relies on metal hardware or reinforcement. Confirm UV stability, installation clearances, post/foundation design, cleaning instructions and the local supply of replacement components.

Choose by exposure and function
For an open front boundary, powder-coated aluminium can balance visibility and low routine finish work. For full side-boundary privacy, compare documented coated-steel, PVC and treated timber systems on wind design and repair path. For commercial security, hot-dip galvanised and coated mesh or tubular systems may be appropriate when the specification matches the corrosion environment.
Do not accept an exact lifespan forecast without a documented system, exposure category, installation and maintenance record.
