Best fence for sloping sections

Compare raked, stepped and site-built fence systems.

Choose the fence geometry before the material. A raked fence follows the ground with a continuous top line; a stepped fence keeps panels level and changes height at posts; site-built timber can vary individual paling length. Each handles bottom gaps, privacy and modular limits differently.

Survey the level changes

Measure the horizontal run and the rise/fall at each proposed post, gate and direction change. A single “moderate slope” label is not enough for ordering panels. Confirm whether the ground will be regraded and whether retaining is required; a fence should not be priced as an informal retaining wall.

Containment and privacy gaps

Stepping a 2.4 m-wide panel over a grade creates a triangular opening under the downhill end. That can defeat dog containment and expose sightlines. The solution might be shorter bays, a raked system, plinth/kickboard designed for the purpose, or individual palings. The lowest ground point may also control the effective height used for planning or privacy.

Gates on slopes

A conventional swing gate needs clearance through its entire arc. If the ground rises in the opening direction, the leaf may strike the surface. Options include changing swing direction, reducing leaf width, using paired leaves, carefully designed rising hardware or selecting a sliding arrangement where foundations and space permit. Price the geometry, posts and drainage—not just the gate leaf.

  • Maximum panel/bay width and adjusted post centres.
  • Bottom-gap treatment and target top line.
  • Retaining, excavation, rock, spoil and drainage responsibilities.
  • Gate swing/slide direction and threshold detail.

Three ways a fence meets a slope

Raked: the top and bottom follow the grade. This works naturally with site-built palings and some rackable metal panels. Stepped: level panels change elevation at posts, creating a stair-step top and triangular spaces beneath unless detailed. Contoured: mesh or wire follows the ground, suited to practical and rural containment.

Survey grade breaks, not just end levels

A run can rise evenly or contain hollows and sudden changes. Record intermediate levels and retaining edges. For dog containment, inspect every stepped bottom gap. For privacy, check how a stepped top changes sightlines from both properties. For pool barriers, the complete slope detail must remain compliant.

Posts and retaining

Grade changes often create special post locations even when the nominal spacing has not been reached. A fence beside or above retaining should not be casually fixed to the retaining structure. Show loads, levels and connections to the appropriate designer. Surface water must not be trapped against posts or redirected onto neighbouring land.

Price the geometry

Ask quotes to state raked versus stepped construction, number of level transitions, custom panel allowance, paling cuts, post lengths and access. A moderate even slope may add little to chain-link but materially change a rigid privacy panel. Include photographs taken along the line and a level sketch in the quote request.
