The best dog fence is designed around the most capable escape behaviour in the household. A large calm dog may need a robust gate but not a visual screen; a small terrier may exploit a bottom gap; an athletic dog may jump; a reactive dog may climb or bark because pedestrians remain visible. Material choice comes after that behaviour profile.

Material choices by behaviour

Close-board timber allows gaps and lower edges to be tailored and individual boards repaired. Solid PVC or coated-steel panels block sightlines consistently, but ask how damaged modules are replaced. Aluminium pickets are low in routine coating work and keep the yard visually open; specify a gap suitable for the smallest animal. Chain-link covers long runs economically but remains visible and may be climbable for some dogs.

Gate security deserves its own specification

Record gate clearances, latch height and operation, hinge adjustment, stop direction and whether a child or delivery visitor could leave it unsecured. A double-gate drop bolt needs a firm receiver. On a slope, the swinging leaf may require more bottom clearance, which can conflict with containment; a stepped threshold or different gate geometry may be needed.

Inspect the yard, not just the boundary

  1. Walk the line at dog-eye level and photograph every opening.
  2. Push posts and panels to find movement.
  3. Check vegetation, stacked materials and retaining that create launch points.
  4. Observe where the dog patrols, digs or reacts.
  5. Recheck after storms, landscaping and utility work.

Material choice by containment problem

Close-board timber is adaptable: boards and lower gaps can be tailored, and damaged palings can be replaced. It suits privacy and reactive-dog screening, but rails on the dog side can provide footholds for a climber. Coating and ground-line inspection belong in the maintenance plan.

PVC privacy panels provide consistent visual closure without timber coating. Confirm impact resistance, panel retention and how a damaged proprietary component is replaced. On a slope, stepped panels can create triangular bottom gaps unless the lower detail is designed for the dog.

Aluminium pickets preserve openness and have low routine coating work, but the clear gap must suit the smallest dog using the yard. A reactive dog may continue to see every trigger. Dense aluminium slats can screen views but cost and wind load differ from open pool-style panels.

Chain-link can contain long runs economically and follows sloping ground, yet it provides visibility and potential footholds. It is usually better for a calm dog or a secondary enclosure than for an accomplished climber or a dog that repeatedly charges visible triggers.

Audit the complete escape route

Walk at the dog’s eye level. Inspect the sides and bottom of every gate, gaps beside posts, stepped panels, drains, eroded soil and damaged boards. Move bins, stacked timber, kennels and outdoor furniture that create launch points. Retaining walls and decks can reduce the effective fence height from the inside even when the street-side measurement looks generous.

On a multi-dog property, design for the smallest gap and the most capable jumper, climber or digger. Recheck the line after storms, landscaping, utility work and gate adjustment. Containment also depends on supervision, exercise and behaviour management; a fence should not be sold as a cure for anxiety or reactivity.

Costs to compare

Timber’s structured installed range is $150–$270/m. PVC is $220–$430/m, residential aluminium $180–$380/m and chain-link $95–$210/m. These ranges describe different systems, not equivalent containment. Add any anti-dig detail, privacy infill, specialised gate and old-fence removal before comparing totals.

Dog-fence decision

Choose the simplest system that blocks the known escape behaviour without creating a new one. For a reactive digger, that may be a solid lower and visual barrier. For a calm large dog on a long boundary, open chain-link with a secure gate may be enough. For a small dog at a modern front boundary, close-gap aluminium could work if street visibility remains safe.

Check proposed height against Auckland fence height rules, then submit the dog profile, boundary photos and every opening through the quote form. Contractors need the behaviour and failure points—not merely “dog-proof fence”.
