Timber fencing vs Aluminium fencing

Timber adapts well to irregular sites and traditional homes; aluminium reduces coating maintenance and suits crisp modern detailing.

Aluminium is usually the stronger choice for low routine coating work, open sightlines, gates and a precise contemporary finish. The privacy-density trap

The structured midpoint is $205/m for timber and $275/m for residential aluminium. That comparison is useful only at concept stage. A simple vertical aluminium panel is visually open; a full-height close-board timber fence is solid. Dense aluminium slats or louvres use more material and fabrication and can move well above the base range.

Write the required gap or sightline performance into both quotes. If airflow matters, compare measured openness rather than the word “privacy”. Solid systems carry more wind load and may shade or visually dominate adjoining space.

Where timber performs better

Timber is built from adaptable members, so it handles irregular ground, short returns and awkward transitions without every component being custom-fabricated. It can suit established villas and gardens, and a damaged paling is usually a familiar local repair. It also allows privacy to be adjusted with overlap, board width, alternating boards, trellis or mixed-height sections.

The owner accepts material movement and a maintenance decision. Weathered timber changes colour; stain needs renewal; paint requires preparation when it ages. Ground clearance, H4 posts, H3.2 above-ground members, compatible fixings and drainage are more important than a generic lifespan promise.

Where aluminium performs better

Aluminium is useful where a light, dimensionally consistent panel or gate is wanted. Vertical pool-style rails preserve views; horizontal or vertical slats can create a modern front boundary; louvres can redirect sightlines. Powder coating provides the colour finish without a timber painting cycle.

Aluminium does not mean “no maintenance”. Coastal salt and airborne contaminants should be removed according to the coating supplier’s guidance, hardware must suit the exposure, and scratches or impact damage need attention. Slope, wind and fabrication

On a slope, timber can be raked or stepped with individual palings cut to the ground profile. Aluminium panels may rack within a defined limit, be fabricated to a rake, or step between posts. Frequent small level changes can make custom aluminium expensive, while a clean regular slope may suit a fabricated panel well.

For wind, compare the completed infill. Open pickets release more air than dense slats or solid boards. Post sections, centres, foundations and gate frames must match height, openness and exposure. A lightweight material can still impose high load when it forms a large solid surface.

Gate compatibility

Aluminium’s low weight and fabricated frames often suit pedestrian, swing and sliding gates. Timber can match the fence exactly, but a wide timber-infilled leaf may become heavy and can change as boards absorb and release moisture. Five property scenarios

  1. North Shore rear boundary with uneven ground: timber is usually easier to tailor; specify fixings and drainage for exposure.
  2. Modern front fence needing street visibility: aluminium pickets or spaced slats provide a controlled open appearance.
  3. Dense privacy beside outdoor living: compare close-board timber with a priced dense aluminium system, including wind and shade.
  4. Pool boundary: use a purpose-designed compliant aluminium system; ordinary timber can only be used when the complete barrier design meets F9.
  5. Rental with repeated impact risk: timber may be easier to patch; aluminium may reduce coating work. Decide which failure is more likely.

Choose timber, aluminium or something else

Choose timber for irregular sites, natural character, high privacy and board-level repair. Choose aluminium for open or precisely spaced panels, contemporary gates and low routine coating work.
