Choose coated steel when
The requirement is a thin, consistent solid screen across straightforward runs and the product’s exposure category is supported. Verify the actual brand and system warranty.
Choose aluminium when
You need visual permeability, modern slats, pool-style panels or a lighter gate leaf. Dense privacy aluminium can exceed the base price, so specify clear gaps and sections.
Consider something else when
Timber may adapt better to irregular slopes and offers easy board repair; PVC offers another solid low-coating-maintenance system; planting can soften either material.

Test a mixed-material option
The choice does not always need to be all steel-panel or all aluminium. A solid coated-steel side boundary can provide economical screening while aluminium at the street or gate preserves visibility and a lighter appearance. If mixing systems, ask the contractor to detail transitions, posts, incompatible-metal separation, colours and future replacement access. Price the junctions explicitly rather than assuming two standard metre rates will meet cleanly.
Compare a solid sheet system with a fabricated panel system
Coated-steel fencing is usually selected for continuous privacy. Aluminium can be open pickets, spaced slats or a dense custom screen. That makes the first decision opacity: comparing a solid sheet panel with open aluminium on price alone does not answer the same brief.
